What We Do
Our programmes are categorised under sustainable and inclusive social development, financing, digitalising, and strengthening the research and practice of social policies.
Sustainable Social Policy
Blooming Social Pen explores social policy and development from a sustainability perspective. We try to understand the indigenous welfare approaches different societies in Nigeria and countries in Africa use in caring for their vulnerable communities. We explore the synthesis of the gaps found in these with formal approaches to explore continuity in the inclusive development of vulnerable groups. We also examine the issues of food security, climate change, and energy use and their impacts on sustainable social policy and development in Nigeria and Africa through research and programming.
Digital Social Policy and Development
Blooming Social Pen focuses on bridging digital divides and promoting the innovative use of digital technology for learning, economic prosperity, and social development. Some of our programmes in this category are Mobile Tech Kids. It aims to support digital education access and infrastructure for street and out-of-school children, underfunded schools and young people from low-income households.
Strengthening Capacity in Social Policy and Development
Blooming Social Pen explores innovative ways to build the capacity in social policy processes and cycles across Nigeria and Africa. We understand the strong potential of young people to lead change in their communities. We are invested in mentoring young Africans and facilitating citizen-led engagements to improve social policies and inclusive development. Hence, we use programmes such as the Young African Scholars in Social Inclusion Mentorship Programme (YASSIMP) and Social Policy Corner to drive this.
Inclusive Social Development
Some of Blooming Social Pen’s programmes within this category are Book Donation Drive, Streetkids Learn, and Project Her Life Matters. We use conventional and innovative means in engaging with different underserved groups within cities and rural areas of Nigeria and Africa. To improve their capabilities, social protection, learning, and well-being.
Financing Social Policy
Blooming Social Pen examines different private and public financing sources such as tax, domestic resource mobilisation, remittances, debt and trade to gain insight into the challenges hindering the sustainable financing of social policies and programmes. In addition, we are also curious about the present social policy financing landscape in Nigeria and Africa. This curiosity extends to our investigating and collaborating on various creative methods for obtaining and administering public finances for social policies. We also draw insights from successful case studies implemented globally. The primary tools for these are research, collaborations, and change advocacy.
