Pre and during COVID-19, social protection programmes are seen as the magic bullet that solves poverty, inequality, and various developmental challenges. Thus, it became one of the go-to strategies that countries deployed to blanket their citizens from harsh realities. This is evidenced by the infamous Brazilian Bolsa Familia Programme which demonstrated the effectiveness of social protection and its system in lifting the ultra-poor out of poverty when designed well. However, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the existing vulnerabilities within social, economic, and environmental contexts in developing countries, especially among underrepresented groups such as women, poor households, and rural communities deepen. What is the solution and how can social protection programmes be designed to engender sustainable economic development?
